This week, UNC students marched across campus to fight proposed tuition increases. But their shouts and signs weren’t enough.

The Board of Trustees voted Thursday to move forward a sweeping plan to raise in-state student tuition by at least 28-hundred dollars over the next five years. The plan still needs to be approved by the Board of Governors and state legislators.

The plan would increase undergraduate tuition for North Carolina residents by almost 16 percent and bump out of state tuition by about seven percent. Trustees say higher tuition is needed to make up for deep state budget cuts.
