Drug shortage affects UNC Hospitals

By Michael Tomsic

N.C. Cancer Hospital Clinical Manager Lindsey Poppe pulls up the hospital's supply of methotrexate.

Soon, thousands of children suffering from cancer should no longer have to worry if one of the drugs that could save their lives will be available. That’s the message from the Food and Drug Administration this week, after supplies of metho

trexate,

a cancer drug, reached such low levels that some hospitals worried they might run out of it.

In Chapel Hill, the shortage is forcing the N.C. Cancer Hospital to cut down the number of days a week it gives patients the life-saving drug.

Faculty members endorse athletic principles

By Michael Tomsic

The UNC football program is still waiting to hear if it’s in more trouble. The NCAA has yet to announce what the program’s final punishment will be for the scandal under former coach Butch Davis. NCAA investigations that began in 2010 found some players cheated in classes and took gifts from agents.

In response to that and other college scandals, a group of UNC faculty members have been meeting to discuss how to keep the athletic program in line with the university’s core mission. They came up with a statement of principles that more than 100 faculty members have signed.

How common is cocaine use at UNC?

By Danielle Tepper

Three UNC students – all of them former varsity athletes – face court dates starting next week on charges of cocaine possession. Their arrests have sparked campus discussion about the extent of drug abuse at UNC.

Chapel Hill police allegedly found the three students in a parking deck on Rosemary Street earlier this month. Police say one of them appeared to be snorting something, and the suspects had a plastic baggie with cocaine residue on it.

Some students at UNC – and even one administrator – say they weren’t surprised to hear about students getting busted for allegedly using the drug. So how common is cocaine use at UNC?
