UNC’s next student body president election has finally been decided. Social media such as Twitter and Facebook have been linked to weight loss. Carolina received a silver rating in sustainability, and African American women are giving up the hair products and going natural.

Carolina baseball off to a winning start

After failing to make the College World Cup for a fifth consecutive time last year, the UNC baseball team is determined to bounce back this season. They’re off to a great start so far, coming off of a big West Coast road trip where they beat some quality opponents to open the season 4-0.

Hair decisions: Relaxers, straighteners, or natural?

Some African American women on UNC’s campus are taking the taboo and — for some  — frightening leap to “natural hair,” which means no relaxers or chemical straighteners.  Some women are all for the new movement, but others aren’t quite sure.

APPLES provides alternative spring break options

Though many UNC students will spend this spring break on road trips, cruises, or the beach, others are skipping the sun and good times to spend their week in a non-traditional way. The APPLES Alternative Spring Break Program allows students to spend their vacation doing service in communities outside Chapel Hill.

Rolle finding success in women’s basketball

The women’s basketball team closes out its ACC schedule tomorrow night in Durham against the rival Blue Devils. Earlier this month when Duke came to Chapel Hill, the Heels won 62-60. The game was a coming-out party for sophomore Waltiea Rolle, who flirted with a triple-double and sealed the game with a late stop.

A recent UNC study explored how Twitter, podcasts, and iPhone apps can help people lose weight. Although the official results aren’t out yet, some participants discovered that social media can be among the most effective tools to get healthy.

Student code confuses elections

The UNC student elections took an unusual turn, as confusion over the student code led the Supreme Court to issue multiple injunctions on Election Day.  These injunctions delayed the announcement of results in the race for Student Body President and in a referendum that would raise student fees to pay for renovations of the student union.

Carolina awarded sustainability rating

The sustainability tracking and rating system, or STARS, has awarded UNC a silver rating — the second highest ranking possible.   The STARS program is becoming the standard for measuring how sustainable at each of the nation’s universities.  UNC is using the report as a guideline to see what it does well and what it can improve.

New interactive features on video game systems get players physically moving and shedding calories while playing the latest video games. Even games not marketed as fitness programs, like Rock Band, can give players a moderate workout.
