A picture of Sandro Botticelli’s “Primavera” hangs over UNC senior Emily Crockett’s bed. It’s one of her favorite paintings, and she got the chance to see it while studying abroad in Italy. But after returning to Italy the following summer, she was sexually assaulted. Being in an unfamiliar place only magnified the pain and confusion that accompanies sexual assault. Sexual assaults can be especially horrific if they happen far away from home. Research shows that American college students studying abroad are sexually assaulted at least as often as they are in the U.S. And there usually are few places they can turn for help.
