Former U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings officially became UNC system president Tuesday. In her first week on the job, she met with members of the Board of Governors in Fayetteville and laid out plans to streamline the system’s administration.  She also said she would bring transparency to UNC board meetings, which have been criticized for their secrecy.

Meanwhile, students welcomed her to Chapel Hill with a protest in front of Wilson Library — one of several since she was hired in October. Tuesday at the Spangler Center, President Spellings talked with Carolina Connection about the controversy over her hiring and other topics.
