Trustees delay Saunders Hall decision

This week’s Board meeting had what Trustee Alston Gardner called the most people he’d ever seen at a committee meeting, as representatives of several groups spoke about the future of Saunders Hall. But before the discussion had even started, Gardner announced the board will seek more public opinion on the issue through a web site that will solicit comments until April 25th. It will be at least another month before we know whether Saunders Hall will keep its name. This week, the Board of Trustees put off a decision on renaming the building, which honors former Ku Klux Klan leader William Saunders.

That delay comes despite a big turnout at the Trustees meeting, with almost all the speakers calling for Saunders’ name to be removed.
