UNC refutes Willingham’s findings

By Alex Thomas and James Kaminsky

It was three months ago that UNC academic adviser Mary Willingham went public with claims that some UNC student athletes read no better than fourth graders.

Yesterday, the University officially responded to her allegations with the results of a study done by three professors from three different universities: Nathan Kuncel from the University of Minnesota, Lee Branum-Martin from Georgia State University, and Dennis Kramer from the University of Virginia.

The report by the three refuted Willingham’s case, saying that the data did not match her public claims.

We tried to contact Provost Jim Dean and Mary Willingham. Neither would talk with us.

Our Alex Thomas joins us to talk about the University’s reaction.
