New tool helps find open beds

At UNC Hospitals and elsewhere in the state, more people with psychiatric problems are coming to emergency rooms for help. They may have bipolar disorder, severe depression or have overdosed on drugs or alcohol. And they often wait days for a bed in a treatment center. Statewide, there just aren’t enough beds. Down east, employees at one treatment center recently developed a creative tool to reduce wait times.
