Why NCAA investigations are on the rise

By Sydney Harris

This coming week, we expect another big development in the ongoing investigations into the Tar Heel football program. It’s been more than a year, and now UNC will issue its official response to the NCAA allegations that players cheated in class and took gifts from agents. That response is due Monday.

In the meantime, NCAA investigators were back on campus this week. They wouldn’t say why, and UNC officials wouldn’t comment on the visit either. But a source told WCHL the NCAA wants to learn more about an NFL agent teaching a class this summer, in the department of African and Afro-American studies.

But UNC isn’t the only school under investigation. In the ACC alone, three programs have recently gotten in trouble. And teams in the SEC, Big 10 and Pac-10 have also forfeited bowl games and lost scholarships in the past few years.
