Falsified hate crime rallies support

By Debbie Vu

UNC students were shocked to get an email from Chancellor Holden Thorp this week detailing what seemed to be a hate crime. The email said a UNC  first-year student  was burned and called a homophobic slur by an unidentified man.

The incident outraged the university community.  But the hate crime never actually happened. The injuries the student sustained were self-inflicted.

But even after finding out the truth, UNC students, administrators, and Chapel Hill community members still rallied in support of victims of hate.
