Four years ago, the Tar Heel men’s basketball team was playing an NCAA tournament game in New Jersey arena when UNC senior Jason Ray – who traveled with the Tar Heels and dressed as the ram mascot – was hit by a car hours before tip-off.
He died three days later. While Ray is still mourned by his family and friends, his legacy lives on in an especially important way. He was an organ donor, and four people are alive today because of that.
His parents, Emmitt and Charlotte Ray, created and now run the Jason Ray Foundation, which raises support for organ donation.
