Thorp: No plans to rescind resignation

Several hundred students rallied outside South Building in an unsuccessful attempt to urge Chancellor Holden Thorp to reconsider his resignation.

UNC Chancellor Holden Thorp has re-asserted his plans to step down at the end of the school year.

Thorp announced his resignation Monday, saying the university could benefit for new leadership after an academic scandal involving the football team and a travel scandal involving two university fundraisers.

Students, faculty, and the Board of Trustees have called on Thorp to reconsider his plans to resign. But at a rally of his supporters Friday, Thorp reasserted his intention to step down.

“I’m confident that it’s in the best interest of the university, me, and my family for me to go back to the faculty next fall,” Thorp told supporters.

He intends to return to the chemistry department to teach next school year.
