More than 100 UNC faculty members are calling for the university to keep its athletics program more in line with its core mission – to educate and serve the public. They’ve signed a statement of principles saying the university should also be open about what’s going on in the athletic department and provide its athletes a meaningful education.
That’s all partly in response to the football scandal under former coach Butch Davis. The NCAA found some of his players cheated in classes and took gifts from agents.
UNC Exercise and Sport Science professor Richard Southall is an expert on that kind of scandal. He researches legal, ethical and marketing issues in college sports, and he’s studied other scandals involving academic fraud. Carolina Connection’s Michael Tomsic spoke with him in his office this week, and asked why he decided to sign the statement.
