Public libraries nationwide charge for late book returns, but fees are turning away some users who cannot afford the fines.
At the Chapel Hill Public Library, keeping fees low and maintaining affordability is a high priority.
I’d like to know if others are bothered by the fact that Chapel Hill Public Lirary charges a sizable fee for those who don’t live there. I was shocked, and offended, to find that, as a Durham Co. resident, borrowing books from CHPL isn’t a free, reciprocal process, as it is among other libraries. So here’s my suggestion, in the interest of fairness, Durham should start charging a non-resident fee to those who use our infrastructure when they visit Southpoint Mall or the Carolina Theatre. Seriously, can anyone tell me if the CHPL policy has been challenged?
Thanks
