The government of Jamaica has confirmed at least 19 deaths from Hurricane Melissa. The storm made landfall as a Category 5. Its winds reached 185 miles per hour, among the strongest Atlantic hurricanes ever recorded. Melissa has caused widespread flooding, destroyed homes, and uprooted trees throughout the area.

We’re joined in the studio by UNC Sophomore Christian Nooks, whose family is in Portland, Jamaica.  He’s been in touch with his grandparents since the storm hit Tuesday.
