UNC research may lead to a more sustainable way to recycle tires

At the Orange County Landfill in Chapel Hill, workers separate old tires from the rest of the trash. These tires are then transported to New River Tire, a recycling facility in northwestern North Carolina. (Melodi Carty / Carolina Connection)

A UNC adjunct professor has developed a new chemical recycling method for tires.

While it’s common for the rubber in old tires to be recycled, there are still environmental concerns about the process. Because of their complex chemical composition, the process for extracting the rubber from tires often produces pollutants like microplastics. Aleksandr Zhukhovitskiy’s research could provide a more sustainable way to recycle them.
