The U.S. government has terminated the visas of six international students at UNC as of Tuesday, according to a UNC Media Relations statement.
In its statement, Media Relations said the university regularly communicates with international students about their immigration status and regulatory changes. But in a separate email to Carolina Connection, Media Relations said the U.S. government does not necessarily notify International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) directly of changes to international students’ visa status.
“ISSS is available to advise, answer questions and provide resources to all university-sponsored international students and scholars,” Media Relations said in its statement.
Other universities in North Carolina whose international students saw their visas revoked include North Carolina State University, Appalachian State University and Duke University. Duke’s student newspaper, The Chronicle, reported the terminations at Duke, while WFDD reported the terminations at App State.
The students at N.C. State and Duke left the U.S. as a result, as announced by N.C. State and reported by The Chronicle. Media Relations declined to state whether the UNC students have also left the country.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
