‘A cigar flying with wings’: Thousands of chimney swifts are roosting in UNC’s oldest tree

UNC’s oldest and most famous tree has become the unexpected roost for thousands of endangered birds. A species known as the chimney swift has earned its name from settling in residential and industrial chimneys while migrating. But in an unusual turn of events, flocks have settled in the Davie Poplar.

New Hope Bird Alliance is holding events across the Triangle where you can watch Chimney Swifts roost. Sarah Ellis has more on the feathered phenomenon.
