New ‘down home’ restaurant will replace Spanky’s

By Kennedy Erdossy

Spanky’s, on the corner of Franklin and Columbia Streets, will reopen with a new name and menu. (Kennedy Erdossy/Carolina Connection).

After 40 years on Franklin Street, Spanky’s has closed.

Last Saturday, patrons flocked to the Chapel Hill institution for one last burger, surrounded by the hanging caricatures that Spanky’s is known for. The owners say a new “down-home-cooking” style restaurant will open up in its place.

Kennedy Erdossy reports.
