With the firing of UNC head men’s basketball coach Hubert Davis, a 70-year-long Carolina coaching lineage may come to an end.
Davis was a player under legendary coach Dean Smith and an assistant to Roy Williams for nine seasons. Now, for the first time in decades, Carolina’s next coach may have no connection to Smith’s legacy.
At Thursday’s Board of Trustees Meeting, Chancellor Lee Roberts complimented Davis and his family.
“They love the University deeply, and the university loves them back,” Roberts said. “They’ll always have a place of pride in the hearts of the Carolina family.”
UNC has said nothing about who might replace Coach Davis. However, Roberts said he wants to keep UNC’s athletics program as elite as possible.
“Athletics is the most visible thing that we do,” Roberts said. “I don’t see that changing anytime soon, and we couldn’t be more proud of our athletics program.”
In a statement posted to social media, Davis said his desire was to continue to coach the Tar Heels – but his goal is to coach again in the “very near future.”
Carolina Connection reporter Andrew Sellers spoke to Joe Ovies, co-host of the Ovies + Giglio Podcast, about Davis’s legacy, what’s next for UNC, and leaving the Dean Smith era behind.
