Jeff McCracken, UNC’s director of public safety and police chief, announced Friday that he is retiring. McCracken modernized the university’s emergency response and helped roll out the Alert Carolina warning system. But he also oversaw police operations during the Silent Sam protests, which led to complaints from both sides. Supporters of the Confederate monument say police didn’t do enough to protect it the night protesters pulled it down. While anti Silent Sam activists said. UNC police have been hostile to the protesters.

McCracken’s retirement will create another high profile vacancy on campus, while searches are already underway for several open jobs – including a permanent UNC system president and chancellor. Interim Chancellor Guskiewicz hopes to have the police chief job posted next week.

McCracken joined the police force in 1993, and became chief in 2007.
