Beyond the diagnosis: Durham VA uses oral histories to personalize care for veterans

One challenge for a lot of veterans is getting adequate healthcare. The Department of Veterans Affairs runs the largest healthcare system in the United States, but the size of the institution – and the wait-time scandal of 2014 — can make a patients feel more like a number than a person.

Now, the VA is trying a new way to make health care more personal, attempting to understand patients in a way that goes beyond their medical charts.
