Bar crackdown makes some students rethink fake IDs

by Avery Hall

Two popular Chapel Hill bars — He’s Not Here and La Res — may be facing their last call. State regulators say they served alcohol to Chandler Kania, the underage UNC student who was involved in a fatal accident this summer. He’s Not Here is in danger of losing its license to sell alcohol, while La Res faces lesser sanctions.

Police say Kania used a fake ID to buy alcohol before the crash, which killed three people on Interstate 85.  While fake ID’s are common among underage college students, some say the tragedy — as well as the ensuing law enforcement crackdown — have made them wary of pulling out their own fakes.
