It’s been a little more than a month since the killings of three Muslim American students. One of them, Deah Barakat, was raising money to provide dental work in Syria. No, two people carrying out Barakat’s mission.

Performance poet, writer and UNC alumnus Will McInerney and UNC medical student Mike Mallah are traveling throughout the Middle East. They’re working with the Syrian American Medical Society and the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund — documenting the work these organizations are doing. They’ve been there for about three weeks, and they are currently in Istanbul, Turkey.
