Farmers hope to avoid pig virus

Pig farmers are protecting their herds from a devastating viral epidemic sweeping the state.

The PED virus is found only in pigs, and poses no danger to humans. When it first appeared in North Carolina last year, thousands of pigs died. While large-scale pork operations stand to lose tens of thousands of dollars, small farmers are not as worried.
