Even as UNC celebrates First Amendment Day, some faculty and students are questioning how committed the university is to freedom of the press.
In the past year, UNC fought an unsuccessful legal battle to keep some public documents secret. They were related to investigations into the football program. The university said it couldn’t release them because of a federal privacy law.
But some media advocates and journalists say that’s a common excuse when it comes to records that could make the university look bad.
“Speaking of the First Amendment” is a collaborative project between Carolina Connection, UNC’s student TV newscast, Carolina Week, and its online news site Reese News.
